Steady decline in Indian Citizenship denouncements in Goa

Goa has been witnessing a significant decline in the number of people renouncing their Indian Citizenship in recent years. The number of people giving up their Indian Citizenship between 2015 and 2019 was a cause of concern for the Goan authorities and the Goa passport office. However, the year 2022 marked a significant decline in the renouncement of Citizenship in the state.

Reasons for the decline: There are several reasons that can be attributed to the decline in the number of people renouncing their Indian Citizenship in Goa. The following are some of the major reasons:

  1. Improvement in the economy: The economy of Goa has been improving in recent years, providing better job opportunities and higher standards of living for the residents. This has led to a decrease in the number of people looking to migrate to foreign countries for better prospects.
  2. Increased awareness: The Goan authorities have been making efforts to create awareness among the people about the advantages of retaining Indian Citizenship. This has led to a change in the mindset of the people and a reduction in the number of people giving up their Indian Citizenship.
  3. Streamlining of the application process: The Goa passport office has been working to streamline the application process for obtaining foreign nationality. This has made it easier for people to obtain foreign nationality without having to give up their Indian Citizenship.

Continued interest in Portuguese nationality: Despite the decline in the number of people giving up their Indian Citizenship, the interest in acquiring Portuguese nationality remains high in Goa. This is due to the availability of Portuguese nationality for those who were residents of former Portuguese colonies of Goa, Daman, and Diu and their descendants.

The decline in the number of people giving up their Indian Citizenship in Goa is a positive development for the state. It indicates that the people of Goa are happy with their Indian Citizenship and are not looking to migrate to foreign countries. However, the continued interest in acquiring Portuguese nationality is a matter of concern for the Goan authorities and the Goa passport office. They must work towards creating awareness among the people about the advantages of retaining Indian Citizenship and providing better job opportunities and a higher standard of living for the residents.
